“…I would definitely recommend the programme. It opened my eyes to a lot of things about working with the general public…”
Lucia first heard about the Personal Best course at her local resource centre and the programme really interested her.
Lucia was born with Cerebral Palsy which only affects her physically. She faced many obstacles whilst on the course including difficulty in getting her views across when contributing to discussions and typing which took a long time.
Lucia found the course very enjoyable. "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the course. It’s taught me loads about the word "volunteering" and what to do in so many situations where there are crowds of people. It has also taught me many things about myself."
Lucia made many friends and benefited greatly from being involved in the Personal Best programme. She found it productive and challenging and has allowed Lucia to learn a lot about herself and build up her confidence. She has goals to continue volunteering on a regular basis. Lucia is keen to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"…the entire course has been fantastic. I’m not saying it’s easy by any standards; there are loads to do & lots of homework. But it’s worth it…"
Since completing the course, Lucia volunteers fortnightly with administrative support and research for the Southgate College and Waltham Forest Personal Best newsletter. Lucia meets new challenges just by getting to the premises. A well liked and vital part of the newsletter team, Lucia’s volunteering has boosted work morale and productivity of the team and work environment.
Lucia’s proudest moment since completing the course was her nomination for a European Social Funding (ESF) Award for ESF Participant of the Year in 20+ category in October 2009. Lucia was nominated by Southgate College and Waltham Forest for her participation on the Personal Best course.
